Oracle trying to build a linux community

I was recently invited (by email) to an Oracle devday (tectonic has more details) on November 7th. The interesting part is that Oracle is trying to do three things with the DevDay (and it's marketting):

Attract geeks and distract them with geek toys in an effort to get them to be interested in Oracle development (i.e. Soapboxing from their free lemonade stand)
Attempt to get into some viral marketting using online resources like tectonic and getting local bloggers to do some marketting for them, to attract geeks who have Knowledge™, and will speak about what happened at the DevDay
Use it as part of their very clear desire to get into some of that linux pie, and expand/build a community

It seems like an interesting experiment, and I am interested to see how it pans out. I am very keen to see companies are trying to build communities (especially if they are focussing on Linux) since communities can teach a company a lot, make them more flexible, but only if the company listens to it's community properly (i.e. there is no point in building a community if you are just going to keep them round to look cool, the purpose of a community is to help you build a better company/product, not to just get some free PR). The open source world is good at building communities, and getting better (and a lot of the time all it takes is some healthy attitiudes, and maybe some free beer, but money is not overly important). This is really critical now as competitors start to attract lots of interest away from the traditional DB giants (I read a fantastic article in the print edition of tectonic, but i cannot find it online). I really hope they can make the transition, because as much as I love open source, etc. I don't want to live in a world that stagnates because of it (for e.g. there is only one really powerful raster manipulation tool (the gimp), and while it competes with Adobe et al, when it has crushed them and left them crying, I don't want to land up with only one product to choose from)

People/Companies are still getting to grips with how they can utilise the Internet chatterbox, and how they can get news to spread far and wide, and build interest amongst people, Even to the point that some students from the New Media Lab at Rhodes are looking to set up a Bloggers for hire type service for events next year (although their "product" falls somewhere in the middle of live coverage, online journalists, and bloggers), after the coverage they produced of Fest and the Creative Commons conference (Don't have a link...Colin?). I think it is cool, even if companies go into it all

So...the nice thing about the whole approach to the DevDay is that anyone can go along provided they email oracle, or call them on 011 781 8608, and tell them they are keen. Being in grahamstown means I will not be able to attend, but I hope to attend one of them one day ;)
